Glowing Skin Smoothie!

Earlier this year, I read "Glow from Within" by Joanna Vargas. She starts everyday off with a green juice. Well, juicers are quite expensive and difficult to clean and buying the amount of fruit/vegetables one would need to get a full glass of juice daily would cost a small fortune!

I wanted to get the same benefits, but in a more cost effective and easier way. So I guessed and tested in the kitchen and came up with a fool proof 4 ingredient daily green smoothie that anyone can make. I have an optional 5th ingredient that you can add for additional health benefits.

The key to a perfect smoothie is ratios. You need to have the perfect amount of vegetables to fruit to liquids. If you add in any powders, proteins and supplements, they can change the consistency and flavour as well.

Glowing Skin Green Smoothie

2 cups of spinach or baby kale

1/2 cup of mango or orange

1/2 cup of pineapple, strawberries, raspberries or apple

1 cup of almond milk, coconut water or another liquid

Optional: 1/4 tsp maca powder or one scoop of marine collagen

You can use pretty much any combo of citrus or berry fruits except blueberries!! Blueberries have a jelly consistency and will make the smoothie a lot thicker. As will bananas. If you use half a banana or half a cup of blueberries, you will need to add more liquid. At least 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup more.

My favourite fruit combos are mango/pineapple, mango/orange and orange/strawberry. I will occasionally replace mango with half a banana and add more liquid.

Maca powder is a Peruvian health food that grows in the mountains. It's vegetarian and ground into a powder from. It's good for hormones, boosting energy and has antioxidants that fight sun and environmental damage. I've been using it all year and like the smell and flavour. I add only 1/4 tsp to my smoothies because it is super strong! This is the one I buy from amazon for $20: Maca powder has health benefits for both men and women.

Marine collagen comes from fish and is great for skin, hair and nails. Our skin produces collagen to keep our skin firm. As we age, we lose collagen and our skin becomes less firm. I like this one from Amazon because it is unflavoured, mixes easily and is cheaper than some of the brand name versions but contains all the same benefits:

Let me know if you end up trying a glowing skin smoothie. I love starting my day off with one of these and adding some egg bites, pancakes or toast as well. This smoothie is so light and nutritious but not very filling. If you aren't a breakfast person, it will be perfect, but if you like more of a hearty meal, definitely add some food as well!
