I love Halloween. I love candy, costumes, being scared, suspenseful, mysterious shows and eating festive foods. 2020 has been a tough year for so many it might be harder than usual to get into the Halloween spirit. An easy way to change the mood this week is to start watching a dark, spooky, suspenseful series! These are some of my festive Netflix favourties!
This one came out at the end of last year and is filled with so much fantasy and imagination. It has witches, fairies, kings, queens, princesses, monsters and so much more. There are only 8 episodes, so it's one you could definitely start and finish within the week before Halloween. It's a fascinating, complex story that takes you through time travel, battles and learning more about the very interesting characters.
A group of children embark on a daring adventure to save their town and the world. Set in the 1980s, we see what the olden days really looked like. Riding bikes around town, coming home past dark and lying to adults. This one has regular events, but also extremely bizarre events that cannot be explained. There are 3 seasons and each one is stranger and weirder than the last. It contains mystery, murder, boo scary moments and so much more.
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Set in a graveyard with a vast forest and many witches, it doesn't get more Halloween than this one! Sabrina is still navigating the mortal and witch worlds trying to figure out who she is and how she fits in. This series is set in 3 parts with 8 - 11 episodes in each part. It's very different from the Sabrina of the 90s. This one is dark, scary and has many characters with less than noble motives.
The Haunting of Hill House
Netflix released this one a few years ago and it is really good. It's more than your typical haunted mansion story. There is so much mystery and the characters are so complex and interesting. The flip back and forth through past, present and time periods in between. The story focuses on two families and the impact of Hill House on both. There are 10 episodes in the series and it wraps up nicely. There are many "boo" scary moments in this one without the gore!
The Haunting of Bly Manor
This is a new one Netflix came out with this year. I just finished watching it. There are 9 episodes. It has a great story and even better casting, but the execution wasn't the greatest. It's very slow moving and it is painful at times to get through an episode. The story is really good though and if you can get through the painfully slow episodes, it is worth it in the end. It wraps up nicely with just one loose end.
I hope these shows start to get you in the halloween spirit. Stay tuned for another Halloween post with more festive ideas later this week!
